93% of schools are pessimistic about their school’s budget prospects

Pencil and ScissorsIn a recent blog, we highlighted the issue that schools are set to lose out to a new funding formula. Now, a survey released by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Association Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) highlights the further pressure on school budgets, with schools stating they have had to reduce or cut numerous budget areas of their school in order to survive.

The impact of funding cuts

The report, released in March 2017, highlighted that over 93% of respondents ‘said that they were pessimistic about their school’s budget prospects over the next three years’.

Worryingly, 76% stated that their school had already experienced a budget cut for the 2016-17 academic year.

Out of the 1,200 NUT and ATL members, the majority of the respondents said they have had to limit the subjects available on the curriculum. They have also had to deal with a significant increase in class sizes, whilst reducing books and resources, as well as cuts in maintenance and school improvements.

Some key findings of the report included:

  • 50% reported that class sizes had risen since last year;
  • 50% reported that teaching posts had already been cut and almost 75% reported that classroom support staff posts had been cut – with further staffing cuts expected next year;
  • 73% reported cuts in spending on books and equipment;
  • 41% reported cuts in special educational needs provision; and
  • One in six reported that their school had been driven to ask parents for financial contributions to help with funding.

Don’t let your budget limit your options

We understand that the squeeze of school budgets is a major concern for many schools and an area that stops you purchasing the right resources for your school, or even providing students with a full curriculum.

Our Operating Lease allows schools to spread the cost of the equipment you need, such as, IT, playground and audio visual equipment, over a 1 to 3 year term to make your budget go further.
